Hatha Yoga DVD
Guide
-Getting The Best At
Home
Whether you're new to
Hatha yoga or have been doing it for years, practicing at home
isn't just case of buying a Hatha yoga dvd and getting
straight into it. There are a number of factors you must
consider if you want to gain maximum benefit from practicing at
home.
There are many positive aspects of practicing
Hatha yoga at home including convenience, privacy and cost;
with a bit of consideration you really can get the most out of
practicing in the comfort of your home.
Equipment
The props you will need to practice Hatha yoga
at home are largely the same as those you would need if you
participated in classes:
- a thin, sticky yoga mat
- two blocks; wood blocks provide more support than cork or
foam
- one strap, preferably with a buckle
- one chair
- one bolster; a couple of folded blankets can be used instead
if you wish.
- one or more Hatha yoga DVDs
Location
- If possible, set aside a room or a corner of
a room that you can devote to yoga
- Practice yoga where you are in view of a television and
DVD/video player, so you can follow along with your Hatha yoga
DVD or video.
- Many floor surfaces are good for Hatha yoga. Wood flooring is
probably the best, but marble and tile floors are also quite
good. You can practice on carpet, but it will be easier if
it's tightly-woven rather than too cushy.
- One of the beauties of practicing at home is that you can
alter your location to suit your mood, the time of day and the
weather. Many people have different parts of the house
where they perform different types of poses.
- Doing yoga in a room with a pleasant view or wonderful
natural light can be invigorating; candles or incense can also
add ambiance.
What Time To
Practice
- Find a time of day that best suits you and
try to stick to it.
- Many people find that early in the morning is a wonderful
time to practice yoga; other people find that practicing in the
evening or even just before going to bed works for them.
It's worth experimenting to find a time to suit you.
- One thing that many people find is that the only way they can
be sure of practicing each day is to do it as soon as they get
out of bed!
What Hatha Yoga DVD Should I
Buy?
The type of DVD you should
choose depends largely on how experienced you are with
Hatha yoga. You can get Hatha yoga DVDs for beginners
right through to experienced practitioners. Some Hatha
yoga DVDs come in a series, covering the whole spectrum
from beginner to advanced postures. These type of Hatha
yoga DVDs are probably the best option for long-term
practice; they allow you to progress as far as you feel
comfortable.
Another consideration you should make when
choosing a Hatha yoga DVD centers around personal preference.
Do you like practicing and perfecting a consistent routine, or
do you prefer variety? The routines on some Hatha yoga DVDs are
more repetitive than others, but (depending on preferred style)
this need not necessarily be a bad thing.
Not attending a yoga studio certainly need not mean that
you are disadvantaged at all. With a little bit of space,
appropriate equipment and a Hatha yoga DVD to suit your needs,
you can experience all the benefits of practicing yoga at
home.
And there's a great way to get hatha yoga
DVD's cheaply - and delivered to your house every month. One of
the problems with a lot of subscription services is that they
choose the types of products you get. But this one is a little
different - you can choose between hatha, ashtanga, prenatal,
or kundalini yoga, and even choose your teachers.
